Artist statement

… What makes weaving exciting is experimenting in order to transform the traditional into the contemporary, and create layers into a third dimension …

For past few years, I have been concentrating on creating woven pieces from recyclable material like fabric from old clothes, t-shirts, skirts, dresses, plastic foils, etc.  The fresh and impressionistic look I can achieve is amazing; weaving with the fabric strips, I can attain vibrant colours from the t-shirts and dramatic effects from the woven plastic.

I would like to encourage and inspire more artists to do it: adopting something old to create something new and, thus having some little contribution in helping the environment. My latest work, entitled “Iceberg” has a dual meaning in representation of the current environmental situation; our world faces the great catastrophe of global warming, and the neglect to recycle plastics right now is only adding to our world’s destruction.  “Iceberg” is constructed out of over 1500 plastic bags.

I am and artist, I am a dreamer and fantasist. Although I am romantic, I am fascinated about modern technology.

I am a wife, mother and grandmother. My best masterpieces are my children, my three daughters and a son.

They are perfect!

Now, when they are grownups my life is but art, weaving, mixed media fiber art... and computer networking.

... Mes expériences artistiques visent à faire une transition des style et techniques traditionnels vers le contemporain.  J’essaie aussi d’inclure plusieurs épaisseurs afin de donner un aspect tridimensionnel à mes tapisseries. Ce sont ces résultats qui gardent l’art du tissage si intéressant et si passionnant ...

Depuis les quelques dernières années, j’ai concentré mes efforts  à créer des pièces en utilisant des matériaux recyclés tels que des vieux vêtements (i.e. chandails, robes), des matières plastiques, etc. 

L’allure impressionniste et nouvelle de mes pièces est parfois étonnante; le tissage des bandelettes d’un vieux chandail peut créer des couleurs vibrantes et le tissage du plastique donne un effet dramatiquement différent.

J’espère encourager d’autres artistes à me suivre : utiliser quelque chose de vieux pour créer du nouveau et ainsi contribuer à aider l’environnement.

Ma dernière pièce est intitulée « Iceberg » et présente un double sens à notre situation environnementale : notre monde fait face à un énorme défis avec les changements climatiques et le réchauffement de la planète et le manque de conscientisation au recyclage du plastique contribue à sa destruction. 

La pièce « Iceberg » est tissée avec plus de 1500 sacs de plastiques.

Krystyna is mostly known as a tapestry artist, and this woven medium has greatly influenced her mixed-media art. These texture-rich works reflect her own unique philosophy: “The best thing you can do as an artist, is to allow yourself looseness of expression. Run away from conventional forms and landscapes by creating new relationships with traditional technique, color and media.” Originally from Poland, she has exhibited her works internationally over the last 30 years, and her art is owned by collectors in Europe, Canada, and the U.S.

Studio Sadej "Art of Weaving" course and workshops:

Weaving is a craft and art which can be learned in six to eight weeks (or six to eight days). The course of instruction in weaving can be incorporated in twenty four lessons - (each week (day) 2.5 hours - hands on lesson) and will be enough for everyone to become a fairly good weaver. "Art of Weaving" classes will include:

* Introduction of hand weaving, warping frame, planning the design and simple weaving

* Weaving rules, handling warp and weft difficulties, finishing the first tapestry

* Raising surfaces technique - using Soumaks and other knots

* Smyrna or Ghiordes knot, pre-cut weft (the most used rug knot technique)

* Colour theory - basic weft blending technique

* Three dimensional tapestry, using additional warp and adopting all learned techniques to very own ideas.

Extra:

* Making the decorative pillow

* Weaving without a frame (on a board )- making a small gift bag, (using a needle)

* Floor loom patterns on frame, making table mat

Each lesson will include short lecture about weaving, history, important things to remember, words, names, etc. The supply fee will include frame, board, material for first project plus photocopies with all important information which students will get on every lesson. Each lesson can be a separate workshop if requested.

THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2009 "Instructors Showcase".

I was participating tonight at the Grand Opening of the new Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans (eastern part of Ottawa). It was such a great celebration. I am exhibiting my tapestry "Empire of the Sun" in Ottawa School of Art's Gallery ("Instructors Showcase") The vernissage was held tonight in conjunction with the grand opening festivities of the Shenkman Arts Centre.

Mówiąc o grupie "Harmony" ("Harmonia") nie sposób nie wspomnieć o Wrocławiu gdzie spędziłam osiem interesujących lat mojego dorosłego życia. Były to lata trudne pod względem gospodarczo-politycznym dla Polski i rozwój początkujących artystów jak wszyscy pamiętamy nie był łatwy. Niewiele było takich wspaniałych miejsc jak Ognisko Kultury Plastycznej na Placu Solnym we Wrocławiu gdzie zdolni ludzie, artyści i twórcy znajdowali schronienie, oparcie w gościnnych pracowniach rysunku, malarstwa, rzeźby, grafiki, tkaniny artystycznej. Ja należałam do tych szczęśliwców, którzy mieli szanse poznać i zachwycić się cudowną atmosferą Ogniska i przez trzy lata znajdując odskocznię od trudnej rzeczywistości.

Jak bardzo było to cenne mogłam przekonać się szczególnie na początku mojej emigracji przez Berlin do Kanady, kiedy niewiele z rzeczy materialnych można zabrać ze sobą... wtedy pozostają wspomnienia i umiejętność kreowania plastycznego, które czasami można nawet nazwać sztuką. Tak więc nie mieliśmy mebli, ale ściany naszych pierwszych mieszkań szybko pokryły się dziełami sztuki i to nie tylko w moim wykonaniu, ale również moich dzieci. Ale o tym napiszę kiedyś książkę... Dlaczego wspominam przy okazji otwarcia wystawy Harmony o tym wszystkim?... bo wszystko zaczęło się w Ognisku Plastycznym na placu Solnym. Dzięki pomocy kochanego Czesława Rodziewicza, który pewnego dnia pojawił się na Placu Solnym, powstała Grupa Twórcza "Splot", która miała wiele wystaw, między innymi, trzy we Wrocławiu i dwie w Warszawie.

Po moim wyjeździe z kraju Grupa przestała istnieć - może nikt nie chciał być liderem? Przez wiele lat myślałam o niej z wielką tęsknotą, oraz o tym jak wspaniale byłoby uformować inną grupę twórczą, - tym razem międzynarodową.

Ponieważ w Kanadzie miałam tkaniny Zosi Werblickiej i Ewy Bartosz- Mazuś, artystek, które były ze mną w grupie Splot - zaczęłam formowanie mojej nowej grupy. Włączyłam, więc prace Zosi i Ewy, (które występowały tutaj jako honorowi goście) do moich wystaw i pokazów tkackich. Trzy lata temu zaczęłam również wystawiać moje prace z Marie Constance Morley, jako "Harmony 2" i właściwie to też był początek. Na początku 2003 roku wreszcie doszłam do wniosku, że mam wystarczającą ilość przyjaciół, którzy zajmują się różnymi rodzajami sztuki tekstylnej i czas nadszedł na zrobienie oferty na wystawę, która byłaby inauguracją powstania Grupy Harmony. I stało się...

"Harmony" została entuzjastycznie przyjęta w Centrum Kultury i Sztuki Plastycznej, we wschodniej dzielnicy Ottawy. W tym samym czasie dzięki internetowi nawiązałam korespondencję, (zachwycona jego wspaniałymi, trójwymiarowymi tkaninami) z Nicu Zeleznicov, któremu zaproponowałam udział w naszej wystawie. Nicu zgodził się i ku mojej ogromnej radości przysłał trzy, piękne dzieła, które bardzo się wszystkim podobały jak również dzieła pozostałych członków Grupy Harmony. Dostaliśmy propozycję z innych galerii i mamy zapewnionych wiele wystaw aż do 2008 roku.

Międzynarodowa Grupa Artystyczna "Harmony", oferuje kolekcje rożnych prac z dziedziny tkaniny, włókna i różnych materiałów jak: tkaniny trójwymiarowe, gobeliny, malarstwo na jedwabiu, collage i aplikacje; utkane, uszyte, wyszywane... "
